About Halterm

Halterm Container Terminal Ltd is a container terminal owned and operated by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets, a part of the Macquarie Group of Companies. With natural deepwater, capability to handle any sized vessel, year round ice free access, and a management team with diverse international experience, Halterm is the container terminal of choice on Canada’s East Coast. It is the only container terminal with Super Post Panamax cranes and has no navigational or nautical restrictions. Halterm is an ISO 14001 certified company.

History

In 1969, HALTERM opened the first container terminal in Halifax, one of the first on North America's East Coast. Built at a cost of $15 million, HALTERM was an investment in the door-to-door movement of unitised cargo. Over the years, Halterm developed into one of the first common-user facilities in North America. Halterm has since become a cornerstone of the Port of Halifax.

Our Location

HALTERM's location, just one hour off the Great Circle route, makes it the closest east coast container terminal to Europe. Situated at the mouth of Halifax harbour, HALTERM offers its users a number of key benefits - deep water terminal facility, on-dock rail direct to Toronto, Montreal and the US mid-west daily, networked feeder connections and your vessel approach is clear - no bridges, no narrow channels, no ice, and no escort towage requirement.

Our Facility

Halterm operates Canada’s largest Atlantic Coast container terminal on a 74.5-acre site in the Port of Halifax in Nova Scotia. With four super post-Panamax cranes, one panamax gantry crane and three deep-water berths (total 1045 meters in length) and a host of yard equipment, supplemented by excellent road and rail connections and sufficient storage area, Halterm is ready to meet all your cargo needs. These facilities permit us to simultaneously handle three vessels with containers stacked seven high on deck. Two RoRo ramps provide Halterm the flexibility to handle breakbulk, wheeled, towable and ‘High & Heavy’ cargo. With 74.5 uncongested acres of terminal space, HALTERM’s container yard can accommodate up to 12,500 TEU's, including 483 electric temperature controlled units. Containers are able to arrive and leave the terminal seamlessly through 8000 feet of on-dock rail and four truck in-gates, all equipped for SOLAS scaling. We also have an out-of-gauge gate for oversized cargo. Facilities include an onsite warehouse, maintenance workshop and a 125 truck marshalling yard.
